I was having the same problem in opening Gedit thro shell. But on reinstalling
gnome theme icons the problem is solved.

The gedit is now working perfectly ok in jaunty. Please note that I have
been doing regular upgrades and my jaunty is up to date and I am not able to
tell you when this started working ok.
