I believe you should use the highest number of the rules, not the
lowest. In Karmic I had rules with 45-*.rules and 70-*.rules. When I
created a 45-wminput.rules nothing changed, but using 70-wminput.rules
fixed the problem.
But now, I'm on Lucid and I just have one rule before adding wminput, so
It looks similar, but that one has some error messages I never get.
On the other hand, it seems that it all came from a corrupt ISO. I'm re
downloading and reinstalling to see if this happens again.

Well, post #2 is from yesterday. Today I've tried reinstalling, and this
is what I did:
•Download from US mirror. OK
•Check integrity with MD5 hash. OK
•Created an USB Startup Disk. OK
•Reinstalled Ubuntu from USB. I have partitions for /, swap, and /home. I
format /dev/sda1 as ext4 for /. Others
I forgot to mention: this error is only visible if run from tty. From
gnome-terminal, I just get the End request I/O error.

After some time of using it as it was, it looks like the problem has
fixed itself. It appears from time to time, but a reboot is enough to
bring everything back to normal.
I still wonder where this bug came from; but as for now, I can install
and remove any app I want.

Hey, after 3 years, I think the bug is still active. I'm using Ubuntu
Karmic with Compiz 0.8.2, and I can't change the cursor theme without
logout/login. The only cursors changing are Busy and Text; and over
Firefox and OOo.

Nope, it still opens Nautilus. I could temporarily fix this by modifying
~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list, but when using Gnome, it
opens Thunar. Fortunately I don't use Gnome that often.
