My TTY screen gets corrupted every time I install latest updates from
clean Beta 1 install. Instead of console I just see multi-colored
garbage. The console itself works properly (managed to check it via
"service gdm stop"), only the display is broken.

I agree. I tried running the Unity on Maverick on the 2004 laptop with
P4 and Radeon 9600 video. That was a disaster! Even the ppa purge
could not make the system gui bootable again. Had to make a transition
to Arch Linux.
