Just bought a Toshiba Portege z30 which has a Validity Sensors
fingerprint reader with id [138a:0010]. I applied the vfs5011 patch and
added my device id. It works although I also observe the freezes that
other people mention from time to time.

You could try adding sudo in your cron script, but then you have to
configure nmcli to be sudoed without password. You will probably want to
have a look at /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf. This specifies
what is allowed and there is a special policy configuration with
attribute 'at_console
