Got the same after jaunty->karmic upgrade. In my case adding "rfcomm
bind all" to /etc/rc.local was sufficient to solve this one.
I believe I've already done (4.) in the past.
All the configuration lines in rfcomm.conf are ended with semicolon in my case.

When I run the live USB version of Ubuntu 14.04 it starts out with good
colors, but with desktop on both the laptop screen and the external
monitor connected with HDMI.

I have checked again with latest Live USB image of 14.04.
uname -r says it is 3.13.0-32-generic
The bug is still there, symptoms exactly the same as per comment #22
Because of this issue, I have been stuck with Ubuntu 12.04 ever since.

Yesterday my Ubuntu 12.10 upgraded linux kernel from 3.2.0.37.45 to
3.2.0.38.46 and the problem came back after maybe a year of absence.
For anyone that would like to downgrade, just like I had to:
# remove bad kernel version so it won't be started with grub
sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-3.2.0
This is how colours look like when i plug in my Acer with HDMI cable:

Additionaly one can see how the desktop has wrong size when viewed on

Well, apparently this is not a bug in firefox, because I can see similar
behaviour in Nautilus and in Google Chrome. So this is probably Metacity
or Compiz bug?

In Ubuntu 11.04 if I:
* go to date/time preferences and then to clock tab:
* select "time in other locations"
* type and select New York
I get UTC time (I guess) instead of New York time.
Where I live it's 21:10, time indicator shows 19
After update to 11.04 this happened to me as well (mouse keys).
