Public bug reported:
I noticed that even in Karmic Koala there still is an old version 1.3.7
of sierra module for Sierra Wireless modems. Sierra is already providing
version 1.7.2 in their support site and this is what the newest Sierra
modems require to work. (Daily build 05 Aug 09.)

Actually the correct version today would be 1.7.30. Here is the modules
for different kernel versions provided by Sierra Wireless:

There is still 1.3.x in 9.10, and all the new Sierra Wireless modems
require 1.7.x driver.
