Same issue with Samsung q45 with Nvidia GForce 8400M. (nvidia proprietary
driver)
I found that the cvs (!) version of nvclock
(http://www.linuxhardware.org/nvclock/) supports brightness change.
I just followed instructions there to get the cvs version, compiled it, copied
nvclock to /usr/bin and

Sorry, did anyone check this? The fix didn't work in my case (version
1.6.1 under Ubuntu Gutsy). And it could not work since urllib2 does not
support ssl via proxy
