Well, it appears that the firmware package for the Indigo is not
available on Intrepid by default. I've been attempting to compile the
alsa firmware from source but it keeps failing.

fairly serious issue. I have a soundcard whose driver detection is
flaky, so the audio device does not always work, and when it fails, it
takes Amarok down with it. It got to the point where I'm actually

While it is the soundcard's issue that it is not detected, the point
is that when it doesn't get detected, Amarok tries to access an ALSA sink
that does not exist. The proper behavior for that should be for it to detect

Problem was resolved by removing the "Virtual" section on Xorg.conf.
Nontheless a regular user who had no idea about this file wouldn't have
known about this. The "Virtual" section was added when I attached
another monitor and extended my desktop with it.

I have an echo Indigo I/O card and I can report the same issue, despite
older versions of Ubuntu having and supported it, the card is seen
through lspci but fails when loading firmware with this error on dmesg:

I extended the monitor using the XRandr applet that comes with the Gnome
desktop a few times before, yes. Firefox also has problems with this; when
you try to open Firefox without the extended desktop, the process hangs but
does not respond.

Addendum: relevant (i believe) lines from dmesg:
17179621.56] eth1: NETDEV_TX_BUSY returned; driver should report
queue full via ieee_device->is_queue_full.
However this is always returned, whether the network is seen or not.

that's acting weird because I have an ATA-to-USB controller that's been

performance is abysmal and remains so through the whole session until a
