With your xorg.conf, I see the same result- X doesn't start in 1440x900.
Also I've tried starting X with the monitor completely disconnected,
which also leaves the display in the wrong resolution.
I have tried this out with latest Debian testing (lenny) and see the
same bug, it seems.

This regression is not fixed by the suggestion above. I will attach the
(very similar) output of gphoto2 with this change. Other applications
fail with identical errors.
I am running latest Feisty so suggest that this issue is not a duplicate

I still see this bug too. It seems that, with the default media player
(totem-gstreamer), DVD playback isn't very usable. Some menu options
(Play Disc) fail with cryptic error message, fast forward and rewind

Poster on upstream mailing list suggests creating a file
'/etc/modprobe.d/dvb' with the contents attached.
This works for me. Is there any chance we can have this fix or something
like it merged in? With this the card seems to Just Work.

I can confirm that this issue is now fixed upstream as MarkusRechberger
says. Installing the latest modules from the v4l-dvb repository works
for me.
