I just got this, I did apt-get remove uml-utilities and apt-get install
uml-utilities then reran dpkg --configure -a and all was fine

I got it working again. Apparently EACH time the kernel upgrades you
have to run through EACH step above including purging pulse-audio and
reinstalling it (via ubuntu-desktop). BTW I typo'd it: "sudo apt-get
purge pulseaudio" without the "-"

I did:
sudo apt-get purge pulse-audio

(a snapshot after the patch was added)
tar -xzf alsa-driver-20091116.tar.bz2
cd alsa-driver
./configure --enable-dynamic-minors --with
the winepulse bit from Neil Wilson's repository works great. Sound on
Civ IV has never been better. Even before pulse was in the distro I
never got good sound from wine. Now I do. Thanks!

I have this on the latest kernel, etc. It seems to occur intermittently
and seems like some kind of timing issue. It has a strong correlation
with when a check disk auto-runs or updates that require a reboot
happen.
