I got it working again. Apparently EACH time the kernel upgrades you have to run through EACH step above including purging pulse-audio and reinstalling it (via ubuntu-desktop). BTW I typo'd it: "sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio" without the "-" -- Apple MacBook Pro 5.2 audio output not working htt
