If I understand this correctly, this is the same issue as upstream bug
#594153 "setting alarms on meetings owned by others is prevented".
There is patch attached to that bug. AFAIK the upstream will not update
2.28, they moved to 2.30. May be Ubuntu will be willing to apply that
patch to it's own

Have had the same bug with DarkRoom theme, but at the end it was a theme issue.

I have the same behavior. Evolution doesn't update Indicator Applet about read
messages.
And if I delete message without reading, this action have no reflection at
Indicator Applet.

linux_3.13.0-32.57 kernel is out in -updates repository, so you can simply
update your system to this package version.

If Maverick release will be out without panflute, let's bring back music-applet
package, which was in previous releases, have a good history and removed only
because of panflute inclusion.
Without it this will be a clear regression from previous release.

I've found offending plugin: org-gnome-exchange-operations. It's marked as
'system', so it's hard to get rid off.
I've unmarked 'system' flag and disabled it through plugins interface.
FWIW: I have clear install of Maverick (all updates as of today) in
virtual machine.

Tried Maverick on VM and have same problem.
The calendar work flawless at the same time...
Have run it from console: No suspicious output or error. Same with additional
debug flags.
