DejaVu Sans Book's line height (not spacing) is just slightly different
to Arial's.

As gnome-open $url works fine, I conclude that whatever it is that

Upstream has /absolutely/ no intention of doing this. Their interpretation
of the Desktop Entry Spec is basically along the lines of "how we want the
menu to look", which is the reason we have applications named such delights
as "Take Screenshot".

As far as I am aware, I still have to manually map something like "keypad
enter" to third level chooser in order to be able to type #. I am unaware of
any changes to Xorg that would be relevant to this.
I should add that this probably only affects the British layout, as I
believe # is just shift+3

Selecting the master channel and pressing "m" to mute it and then unmute
it has the same effect. It's an ALSA driver bug in snd-hda-intel.
