I have seen this issue on a Sony Vaio VGN-TT2 after a 8.10 to 9.04
upgrade.
"alsamixer" at the command line, and unmuting the various muted lines
resolved the issue.

I'm afraid I moved back to using Windows on this machine as X was to
slow under 10.10 beta and 10.10 final and 11.04 won't work with my Dell
SSD RAID setup so I can't confirm the status of X on them. I suggest
closing this bug.

I'm seeing this, again on nvidia using both open source and restricted
driver. I get 100% CPU all the time if doing anything.
This was not a problem until around alpha 3.

I set my monitors to go "black" after 5 minutes.
When this happens, the screen gradually dims to black and then power
