This bug affects me as well. I installed on a Thinkpad T42 using the mini iso.
Similarly, I can scan for networks with
$ sudo iwlist scan
as expected.
As a workaround, I am able to configure my wireless network by
installing Wicd and using that instead of NetworkManager.
