The algorithm is correct and the Intel card in my laptop passes both
test 2 and test 3.
After you set the virtual resolution the driver reduces the range of
resolutions that you can choose. This doesn't happen on my laptop though
and I think that this should be fixed in the driver.

I kept using uic.loadUi() because the code was already there and it used
to work. Now that pykdeuic4 has been moved into python-kde4-dev I can do
what I usually do with QT4/KDE4 application i.e. convert .ui files into
.py files at build time. This should be trivial to fix.
I'll post a fix soon.

Both the driver and nvidia-settings were installed correctly. The NVIDIA
kernel modules is loaded.
Are you using Compiz?

Try this and see if it solves the problem:
Get to the following menus (if you use GNOME): System -> Preferences ->
Sessions -> Startup Programs
Then click on "Add"
And insert this command:
nvidia-settings --load-config-only
Then click on "Close".
Restart the Xserver and see if the problem is
Disable Compiz, restart the Xserver and launch nvidia-settings (with
Compiz disabled).
Let me know if it solves the problem.

Dusan: envyng (at least the one in the stable repository) installs
Ubuntu's default restricted modules therefore, in order to the test the
new driver you can follow these steps:
1) enable the -proposed repository and upgrade the restricted modules
2) Type:
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-glx-new
sudo
Kame: I can't reproduce the problem here. Did you use the deb packages
generated by ATI's official installer?

Kame: my packages try to remove those diversions however I didn't take
into account the diversions which the ATI installer creates. I'll have a
look at such diversions.
