New code splits the self-extracting executable from the pythonlauncher ,
so that the launcher/cleanup code is always run from a temp folder, the
pythonlauncher code simply invokes python.exe with appropriate arguments

Wubi always modifies the Windows bootloader and only the windows
bootloader.
So if you have grub, that will be setup to chainload ntldr.
In this case you have to select Windows in grub, and then Ubuntu in
ntldr (then you can press esc).
So the boot sequence is:
Grub -> NTLDR -> Grub4dos -> Linu
> In this case you have to select Windows in grub, and then Ubuntu in
ntldr (then you can press esc).
After which you should see the safe graphic mode.

We did some tests with Brian Murray yesterday (thanks a lot for the
help), to summarize:

Thanks a lot, the above is invaluable. Changes to mount options in
initramfs and sysctl settings should be doable. I am a bit more
concerned about the last comment...
The loopback filesystem (file containing ext3) contains /, so that is
never really unmounted, only remounted r/o in /etc/in
If anyone without Windows wants to emulate, the steps are the following
1) Create an ntfs partition
2) Have a file containing a hardy root filesystem (ext3)
3) Keep the hardy kernel and initrd in another filesystem
4) Use grub to boot off the above kernel/initrd with the parameters:
root=/dev/sda

Colin, about point 4 above, are you sure I should add the sync options
to the loopfile mount?
I would have thought that I should have had sync & co for the host
filesystem (ntfs) but not for the nested one (ext3 in loopfile). The
idea being that the data should hit the metal when the nested fs syn
I can confirm that the issue reappeared in 2.6.24.15. That requires acpi=off to
boot.
It was working well in 2.6.24-12.

On second thought, using:
find --set-root --relative=/ubuntu/disks
/ubuntu/disks/boot/grub/menu.lst
is more generic and even if setting the root is superfluous in the case
of Wubi the setup above might be useful where the grub menu is used
directly without going through the embedded menu.lst. The
s/requires upgrading the grub package/requires upgrading the grub4dos
package/

The find syntax has been changed slightly in grub4dos. Now it is: find
--set-root=/relative/path /path/to/file/to/search
Please do the following test.
Within a wubi installation edit /boot/grub/menu.lst so that the #groot
line reads:
#groot=find --ignore-floppies --set-root=/ubuntu/disks
/ubuntu
