If you have a valid CD, any download failure should not be critical for
the rest of the installation. There is a log file in your user temp
folder. That will help to identify any issue, please attach it here. In
any case you should be able to run Wubi with the command line argument
--skipmd5check.
I think that Andrew is referring to a Hardy installation, where export
ROOTFLAGS is required. This was corrected in Intrepid (0.92a), so there
is no need for step 1 and 3 in 8.10. In intrepid, it should be
sufficient to pass any required rootflags argument in menu.lst (step #2)
and run update-grub.

completes now. It might be though that open + O_DIRECT is used elsewhere
and I wouldn't be too surprised if the problem will bite us again (half
