I tested this bug and it was not reproducible anymore. I guess it can be
closed.

I'd love to have this information before getting into all the trouble of
reinstalling and its inevitable data loss. Anyway, I'd love, too, to see
some developer commenting about your solution and, maybe, adding some
configuration to avoid the problem by default.

I have some good news (at least to me).
A month ago, I got fed up with this bug and reinstalled Ubuntu. The bug
went away. I had to disable Compiz because apparently it is as unstable
as it were years ago but after that the system stopped crashing. So I
believe this approach can solve the problem.
So, has someone tested it? Can it be at least confirmed?

Hi, Joe.
I just ran virtualenv over the same installation and it worked:

I just removed all files from /var/log before closing the lid. Then I
closed it and the problem occurried. I packed all files from /var/log
and am attaching them. They may be relatively clean since they were
taken just after the crash. There will be some data from the new login I
have made however.
Also, the .xsesson-erros file resulting from the cras.

In fact, the Launcher is presented but it appears behind the full screen
