I experienced this problem under saucy. lightdm behaves badly (No login
session option, kicks back to lightdm when logging into unity, etc.) No
useful help in the log files. chown'ing .Xauthority did the trick.

I've been diligently trying to get the system to boot with the mainline
kernels as I notice updates in the repository, but the result is the
same, the kernel hangs on boot.
I did some more digging, and it looks like it's hanging around the point
that ata stuff initializes. (I've attached a screen
I detached the CD drive from the SATA cable as well. The mainline kernel
still got stuck at the same point.
