@shanen: Can you reproduce this after uninstalling ureadahead.
I have noticed that when ureadahead does a trace (does it every 30 days or
after an update) it can cause some xserver issues including segfaults. See Bug
501715 for more details.

Since the used memory doesn't seem to belong to a process, and ureadahead
requires the kernel to be patched, it seems that the issue might be in the
kernel patch.
Is there any information on what the patch is, or where to get the source?

I think this is also related to many users stability issues.
If this doesn't get fixed, I would recommend disabling ureadahead for Lucid.
It could be a bug in the kernel too.

Although there is another issue here, the size of the log files made it
difficult for the user to get help. Even with the logs compressed the
forums wouldn't permit uploading the file. Logs this size hinder
troubleshooting, and can mask other problems by using up all available
storage space.
