More testing has yielded this find:
It seems as though the laptop brightness works like my old Dell 700m.
Plug in the power cable, the brightness immediately increases (to the
preset value), unplug it, it immediately dims, with no transition

Follow UP:
XSANE used to have the resolution drop down box available for use from the main
interface.
Moving of this to an option that is unselected by default and hidden, as well
as in a new location has made xsane a little frustrating.
Even more so for someone who has never used it before.
