were not in the right format for an audio cd (16 bits, 44100 hz). this
did the trick:

Got 5.13 to boot - with nvidia removed (running nouveau)
Exactly the same symptoms as in 5.11: on/off flicker / only VGA resolution.

I contacted upstream and verified that the bug has been fixed on Samba
4.15.
There fix consists of several patches and now we have to evaluate
whether it makes sense to backport everything to Focal.
FWIW, these are the commits that apparently fix the issue (I haven't
tested them myself):

I could reproduce the build failure without the patch, and then verified
that the patch indeed fixes the issue. The package uses autodep8; I ran
the tests and they succeeded.
