I eventually rebooted (using sysrq-reisub) given I couldn't start text
terminal, or gui-terminal to run apport-collect or ubuntu-bug.
The 'live' system was re-run, and apport-collect run on a freshly
rebooted system (same d780 box)

For reference, we had reports of this issue in LP

Yes. My hardware is still working as well as the day I got it. I only
charge it rarely, maybe once every other month. I always turn it off
when not in use and don't leave it attached to the charging base. Maybe
