I found this thread, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2182922&page=2
that gave a solution to a similar problem :
create a file here /etc/pm/sleep.d/trackpad
sudo gedit /etc/pm/sleep.d/trackpad
and add the following

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I have since upgraded to 14.04
LTS so cannot provide the debugging info you require.
I'm pretty certain(?) I have still had the problem - but much less
