I got rid of the startup error message by blacklisting the mei_me
driver. To do that, you can add the following two lines at the end of
the blacklist.conf file located in /etc/modprobe.d. Here are the steps
just in case:
1. Open terminal
2. Type sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

The general reason that gnome-shell will disable all extensions, is when
a buggy extension crashes gnome-shell. This is done as a fail-safe, to
ensure you are able to restart gnome-shell.
Please can those affected try the following:
- disable all extensions
- enable only one of the official extens
Fix committed into lp:ubuntu-ui-toolkit at revision 932, scheduled for
release in ubuntu-ui-toolkit, milestone february-2014

It might be worth mentioning a trick that can be used to check this out
without consuming CDs. If you use an ordinary non-printable CD, the ink
washes off very easily, and you can do many tests without cost.

anything (IIRC)

During the login screen, when notification box appears that shows wifi
name, it is displayed not as a semi transparent box, but a box full of
rainbow colors. This does NOT affect the desktop after login, so there
is no graphical corruption there.
