dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video*deb to install the packages instead, and that seemed
to work, although the dbg packages needed to pull in some additional deps, but
it was fine.

intel-microcode: failed to prepend early firmware to initramfs
Seems like the bug in intel-microcode is fixed and only the task to upgrade
initramfs is left.
