Digikam-2.5 provided with kubuntu 12.04 (or mint 13) doesn't show thumbnails of
your photos (with Canon EOS400d in PTP mode).
I contacted a maintainer of digikam and he suggested to compile a new
gphoto2-2.5 and digikam-2.9
All works now, as expected (thumbnails are showed)
So far these types of Intel hardware are known to be affected:
Gen3: 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 945GSE (which is normally shown as GME in mesa), Q965
Gen4: 965GM
Gen6: Sandybridge
