Everything worked fine till I decided to upgrade packages . Upon reboot
I find that on the left , half of the side bar is chopped . Same for the
top menu bar .

No this is a unity (ubuntu alternate iso) installation. The one major
difference between the working laptop and the broken one is that the
broken one has quantal-proposed enabled (and from there is using the new

Gary, so you did the test in the "/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/" directory?
If that's the case, that means the acpi driver works for you, you don't need
any patch for the kernel.

This happens typically if your package index files are not up to date. I
have the feeling that flashplugin-installer is particular sensitive to
this issue, maybe because the code is dowloaded from a different site or
just because it used to be updated more often than many other packages.

I'd suggest writing an xpcshell test for this general feature. That
would make testing maildir support fairly straightforward.

After some testing, I can confirm that this bug also occurs in Gnome and Unity
2D. Benchmarking using glxgears gives me:
Session - before bug - during bug
Gnome - 17700 FPS - 11 FPS
