well a tab is not a bad idea and would be tablet/finger friendly too.
not sure if it has to overlap apps. Maybe it could have it's own
vertical space on the side (as suggested on comment #9; which would also
serve to show where the alerts generated) and the tab could be more
compact and
would also add that having a visible cue like a tab makes it more
intuitive.

I also noticed the slow reads when trying to create a multi-boot USB stick.
For a 38MB initrd it takes over 1 minute to load on all pcs tested. Using
syslinux, the same initrd (from the same stick) is loaded in less then about
5seconds.
So this is definitely not a Bios issue.

Looking at the stack trace it seems keymonitor.cpp:127 (frame #11) ends
up calling qFatal (frame #9), but in line 127 there is an UQ_WARNING
call, not a qFatal call, so that abort you are seeing should not happen.
Is it possible that you were running with the QT_FATAL_WARNINGS
environment variable
