This appears to have fixed itself after I turned the laptop off and on
again (classic!).
There were no updates waiting to be installed so this is rather weird.

that gcc copes just fine with the "missing" header -- it knows to look
in different directories. But other compilers may not. The Intel
compiler has already been pointed out, but this also affects t
if you want to get the source code from the ppa backed up, you can run
in a term the following:
mkdir pa-backup
cd pa-backup
apt-get source pulseaudio
this only works if you've got the deb-src in your sources.list. if you
added the ppa via add-apt-repository it should be done.

I think you're right with xorg. Note that the same problem is there with
any TrackPoints as well. Only mice seem to be correctly rotating the co-
ordinates.
