I partly agree, however I was happy that because I wanted to retain existing
OS's on my disk,
We are now on 10.10 Maverick and this bug still exists. I can't believe that!
I have over 20 years experience in unix systems, and believe me, if this bug is
meant "by design", than this design is broken!
There should be nothing that root can't access on my own machine. There are

I've upgraded maverick to natty's kernel and xorg, but it crash again.
In Xephyr don't crash, no large use of cpu or memory.
Step to reproduce, only on maverick:

am not longer able to play files via smb:// kioslave in VLC - they
always start to be copied to /tmp directory instead of playing (as VLC
supports smb:// itself)

An addtition: when starting VLC from a command line with specifying a
URI manually, like

it plays it all right, like it is expected and like it was in Dolphin
recently.

I could not set the time with ntpdate command:

I tried uninstalling and the reinstalling Ubuntu desktop. This left me
with an almost unusable desktop. The Gnome desktop appeared, but the
menus in the top panel did nothing when clicked. I had a terminal on
the desktop, so I tried killing compiz. This brought the menus back to
life again. Sh
