I tried to reproduce what you did above, and the system did not come back up.
Worse, there are no console messages after '[ 145.610072] Restarting system.'
(this was on t1.micro). This happened 3 out of 3 times for me.
This is the first time I've looked at those logs in depth. I
I'll throw in that it is still happening for me. Before, I was probably
"lucky" enough to hit the gaps, both in observation and usage. Same symptoms,
with or without VMs running, all CFQ scheduling. Not sure if HDD layout/config
affects this, but maybe it'll help isolate the problem:

ATM I run the old kernel from 10.04. This works, but cannot be a real solution.
