I've been following this bug for quite a while and it is pretty clear
that this is *NOT* a permissions problem. I've always run nvidia-
settings with gksudo / sudo and the problem was always there. So please
don't mark as fixed because of permissions.
I have not tested this with the latest Karmic
Kernel option 'nomodset' does not solve the problem, neither does an
modset=0 in newly created /etc/modules.d/i915-kms.conf. Driver crash is
not due to enabled KMS im my opinion.

was the first change necessary top get karmic working on comparison with

Solution was taken to force destroy event in application instead of modifying
glade file.
The reason is that glade lib must be replaced by gtk builder. Replacement of
libglade by gtkBuilder must be done carefully. A luciole blueprint shall be

FIXED:
I removed the lightning-extension (Tools/Addons) from Thunderbird - this is
probably installed direct from Mozilla?
And replaced it with the one from the repositories and re-started Thnderbird
and all appears to be back.
Perhaps something should be added to the Ubu package to prevent this

It seems to me that the following fixes the wrong behaviour...
I will add it to root's crontab:
sudo /etc/init.d/udev stop
sudo /etc/init.d/udev start
I had this issue on ubuntu 9.04, now on 9.10 it appears again. My HW is:
MSI vr630x (bios still not upgraded).

I also have this problem on my laptop running Karmic with all updates
available as of November 16th.
If I put those 3 lines in /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default:
echo $USER > /tmp/aaa.txt
echo $USERNAME >> /tmp/aaa.txt
echo $LOGNAME >> /tmp/aaa.txt
after every login I get this result:
$ cat /tmp/aaa.t
I can confirm seeing an identical issue, specifically implicating
Empathy on Ubuntu Linux 9.10 x86 connecting to OpenFire 3.6.4.
