Just to add that after purging and recreating all printer
configurations, I am now able to print in b&w with evince, provided
everytime I open it, I change from 'Normal Color', to 'Grayscale'.

I'm one of the maintainers of the Tango Icon Theme for Thunderbird and I
am able to consistently reproduce this crash as well (turning on
notifications and using our theme).
As the theme consists entirely of CSS and PNG images, it's hard to
imaging how we'd be causing a crash, but it seems we are.
I'm not using desktop effects. i don't know how to check the X layout,
but i'm using all the defaults. safe mode is the same it works until I
try to load a website then it freezes.

Would modifying /etc/init.d/atd be good enough solution? Check if the
spool directories are empty and if they are then do not start the
daemon? Or is a more heavy duty solution desired?

Can you post the syslog after you go though the procedure you described
above. When I do what you suggested (hitting cancel after key request),
I do get a solid light, but I still cannot connect. As a matter of fact,
the iwconfig doesn't even show my network SSID. Here is mine:
