bare bones install and afterwards installed GNOME-CORE, XORG, GDM. And then

No, it's not: I'm not even using that machine any more, and, as far
as I can remember, the problem with Ubuntu was resolved in one of the
updates.

Ubuntu.
Software raid seems to work fine under Fedora without such measures.
