i have noticed some other odd things about the sound.
1. chugging sounds.
if no sound should be playing static will begin doing something similar to what

* I'm able to send encrypted messages
* I only see thes sent messages as ciphertext
* crypted incoming message are NOT (!) decrypted
* I can decrypt them by piping them into "gpg --decrypt" which dutifully uses

I just tested opensuse 10.2 with kernel-default-2.6.18.2-34.i586.rpm on
my laptop and it does a very nice shutdown without any strange hard disk
noise.
So I don't think it's a linux kernel problem, but a (k)ubuntu problem.
What could cause this? Maybe the new shutdown methode "teardown"?

You can get a backtrace of the hang by doing "ctrl-C" on the gdb prompt
when it's hanging and then typing "thread apply all bt". If the 10
second video does hang the file manager it would be useful, if not there

In ubuntu feisty up to date, when I try to open a PDF file for second
time, evince appears in gray and doesn't accept any event, only a kill.
