Due to the TopicBasedHelp spec things are changing slightly in the

I guess these errors are caused by applications, not by libnotify. The
apps seems to be handling popup position in a wrong way.
BTW, i have gaim-libnotify here in my pc exactly like yours. And my
notification area is on the top, like default installation.

Sorry for not being very precise. I use Ubuntu Edgy Eft. The locale is
English (United States of America).
I usually use the following keys in other Gnome programs (eg. Epiphany),
but they don't work as expected in Evolution:
* Ctrl-a: Should move the cursor to the beginning of the line, but mark
Stable version 1.50 was just released a few days ago. I downloaded all the
dependencies and compiled it, and it works very well. You shouldn't need the
patch anymore.

Indagating with system monitor i've discovered is the process "beagled"
start eating 2nd core power. Removing it (along with the deskbar) from
startup program totally fixes the problem.
I've also found that likely the same bug was reported before for beagled:
