software raid on the disk. Fails at the same point, installing the GRUB

Further comments: the only fix I've found is a reboot (restarting gdm is
not sufficient, I tend to get left with an all-black login screen save
for the input box). And non-GTK applications are affected: xterms do not
render at all.

check if sbp2 was loaded with serialize_io=1. This is loggeded in a file under
/var/log/. It should be (and it is the default) as it is currently required for

This is the screen that appears when trying to resume. The system is
completely unresponsive (even Alt+SysRq+RSEIUB).

When I rebooted today the system didn't boot, but gave a kernel panic:

Can't you boot into recovery mode? If you press ESC during the few
seconds that Grub allows you to, you can choose a kernel and if you
choose recovery mode, it gives you more output.

Same thing happend to me a few minutes ago.
In fact, the single-mode boot didn't finish ok or there's something
broken with the single-user mode: cursor keys, backspace and the typical
position shortcuts on the command line didn't work, and I couldn't bring
the network interface up.
