After being forced to switch to upstart there is no more option to log
into the system via the console.
My guess is that there should be one (there are files labeled tty1 to
tty6 in /etc/event.d), unfortunately those fail to work.

xvidcore is compiled with 3dnow support, so it doesn't work on Intel
EM64T platforms. It dies with SIGILL (Illegal Instruction) when it is
run. The offending instruction is femmes.
If 3dnow is required, there should be separate packages available for

I had the same problem. Some research turned up that you need to disable
"Workaround transcode NPTL bugs" in Miscellaneous options under
Preferences. This option should be off by default on amd64 systems, so
this bug should not be closed until that is fixed.

Yes, it does not start neither from the menu nor from an xterm.
It is version 2.16.0-0ubuntu1 (happened with 2.15.92..., too).
It does not "crash" with an exception, it exits gracefully with a non-
zero exit code, so there is no backtrace, and I cannot gdb it.
I suspect that it is a font problem

One more thing: AFAIK gnome-terminal uses a special Terminal widget,

If you delete ~/.bash_profile does it work? If you delete ~/.bashrc does
it work? try them one at a time please. AFAIK they both use gtk wigets.

F-spot has a viewer mode that can be started by 'f-spot --view' with the
directory name as argument. It currently needs quite a bit of work, but
a menu file is there, if you right click on a directory, and choose
"open with other application", it will show in the list.
