partitioning you forgot to format /, /usr/ or /var during the
installation, which is not supported ( bug 47046 is about the installer

i did reformat my two linux partitions (/ and swap) and had the crash. it
really desapeared when i unplugged my usb hub.
actually, i also had to remove my hub to run a linux puppy live cd a few month
ago.
to the usb 2 hub are attached a compact flash card reader and midiman 2*2 midi
interface.
To the reporter: Are you sure the CD you tried to install from is OK?
You can use the 'check cd for defects' option in the menu to verify it
(the ISO you downloaded might have got corrupt, the cd might not have
been burned correctly or it may have developed fatal scratches). Thanks.

Just in case I wasn't clear: The "check cd for defects" thing appears
right after booting the desktop CD. If it does turn out to be a bad CD,
you can check the MD5 of the ISO you downloaded. If that is OK, try
burning at a low speed ( 8x or so).

Yup, specimen doesn't show up on the desktop. As well, specimen doesn't
even appear to work without jackd, even though it doesn't require jackd,

I just did an upgrade, and though I've now switched to experimenting with
ntfs-3g, the experimental driver which will be merged into ntfs-progs, the
problem is the same. What's interesting is, that once I restarted after the
upgrade (which included a new kernel), the HAL demon failed to start. A
