On a basic PPC installation of Dapper, we can't seem to play any audio
files at all.
The default application for playing wav files is totem.
If we double click on a wav file, totem says:
"You do not have a decoder installed to handle this

Apparently this is still happening for me even after the gconf edit
suggested above. I'm also not getting any warning messages at all
before the battery dies. I'm running dapper on a Turion 64 (generic
x86_64).
