This is the default behaviour of Automatix, it has no sweet way to fail. It has
nothing to do with update manager.
When you installed automatix it broke your repos. It took the good

Sorry...I totally forgot this bug. The problem is still here. I thought
to be resolved in the last kernel release (2.6.15) but it was for a
workaround I found: I added the line
modprobe -r battery && modprobe battery
into the acpid script, just before starting acpi daemon. So I solved the
problem

After booting, if I put an SD card into the flash slot on the laptop, the media
is detected (the light near it flashes) and I'm asked by the KDE Media popup if

As Andrew mentioned previously, it seems that EDS doesn't crash, but
terminates unexpectedly with exit code 1 - hence the absence of a stack
to trace.

Also, it's generally unclear from the menu what this thingy is supposed
