I changed to using the 'ati' driver and the machine no longer hangs on
shutdown or reboot. Nothing appears on the screen until "Resetting
remote filesystems" appears on the screen though, but shutdown or reboot
is successful everytime.

Not that simple in my case. I tried precompiled 2.6.15-22.34 kernel (and
dapper's final X) and all the same as several months. glxinfo
segfaulting before printing last section, any opengl app crashing X and
leaving (plain 80x25) console in mess. So just a "little" change from
original bug #30382.

After more research, I believe this is still a problem. However, it

If Gaim is using the web browser specified by the KDE setting then
Gaim's preferences window should not show the "web browser" preference.

Ah yes, sorry. I forgot I had XGL/Compiz running. Running under
metacity makes it not show up. This is the only dialog that shows
"untitled window", so is this a compiz bug or just a really obscure,
minor update-manager bug?

At the same time if you are in college this gives you a great place to
spread ubuntu around. I have used my own campus for this and though slow I
have succesfully converted atleast 5 people in the last smester alone to
ubuntu.
