i overcame this through a trick advised by a friend. i have explained it
somewhere in ubuntuforums.org. i am embarrassed for not getting this bug
fixed yet..

try this:
1) startup pc, at grub menu choose recovery kernel mode
2) at console menu (that with red backgroud) choose "resume normal"
3) login at console with your account
4) in console sudo service gdm start
5) do login in gnome
7) now try to shutdown or reboot from menu
