We could consider letting people put their own preferred icon in the
bottom, pushing the Trash into the set of flowing icons. But that would
be a separate bug report.

Sorry, but there is still a BUTTON on Windows 7 for that, just not with an
icon on it... the right most portion of the start bar, past even the
clock/date, if you hover it show a "preview" of the desktop making the
windows transperant, if you click, you get them all minimized (i.e. the
desktop)

Yes, we will add a 'Show the desktop' launcher icon, which can be
removed or re-added from the dash just like any other app. It should
show as running by default if it's there.
John, is that being tracked in a different bug?

People are asking for a MOUSE option to get to the desktop...
Do not turn the blind eyes yet, cause the keyboard short cut or even the
alt-tab DO NOT ADDRESS the suers request.
It cannot be considered fixed yet.

now ctrl+tab(soon to be alt+tab) also have a show desktop option, if it
matters.

Agreed, could even be a right click somewhere... just don't go on braking
something for the sake of fixing something else... that would not be a real
fix

That is not what the work scpace button is supposed to do (i.e. showing the
workspaces)... fixing something by braking something else is not a solution

I have not tried them all, but seems like what happened to me too... it used
to work on the betas, now, sometimes it does, some times it does not...
depends on what is going on, what applications are running, and even if they
are "restored" or "maximized", or which applications are opened together
Hey, I have just checked that the Compiz binding is correct, that is, there
is a Super+D set to show the desktop... still its not working as it should.
And Alt+Tab was not set to Next Window, although, Alt+Shift+Tab was set to
Previous Window :-/

It used to work for me, but now it has stoped... kind of... Super+D
sometimes change the running application (hides Terminal and Opens Chromium
Browser) much like the Alt+TAB would, sometimes it hides every application
(showing the desktop).
By the way, Alt+TAB also stopped working, for good.

We could make that an FAQ, it's a neat solution to the problem. I think
hot corners that change focus are risky at this stage for Natty, but see
how you get on and if it works well we can consider it for Oneiric.
The obvious "mouse only" solution would be something in the launcher. We
haven't done
If someone has the ability to whip up a patch to insert "the desktop" at
the start of the alt-tab queue, so alt-shift-tab gets you there, the
patch would be welcome.

Joric, thanks for the comments. Super-D should work for you, and we will
add a more visible way to do this in Oneiric. Suggestions welcome on the
Ayatana list.

No, we added back the desktop file store in 11.04 because the Dash file
management pieces were removed.
Super-D is the key.

So I frequently need to switch on desktop to manage them.
