@szynt8
Were you prompted during the upgrade about whether to keep changes to
/boot/grub/menu.lst vs. letting the system overwrite this file?
Please attach /boot/grub/menu.lst and /boot/grub/menu.lst~ from the
affected system in this case.

Yeah, make sure the menu.lst is pointing to the new kernel. This is
what fixed both my sound and touchpad.
Here is my config.
## should update-grub add savedefault to the default options
## can be true or false
# savedefault=false
## ## End Default Options ##

@szynt8 Your touchpad issue is not related to sound except for the
fact that you're using the wrong kernel for Karmic. Please note that
Karmic's kernel is 2.6.31, not 2.6.27. Make sure your grub
configuration (grub.cfg/menu.lst) is properly updated.

You're still running Jaunty's kernel (2.6.28) instead of Karmic's
(2.6.31). You should run the latter if you intend to use Karmic! Most
likely the grub configuration (grub.cfg/menu.lst) was not properly
updated, and you also need to run "sudo update-grub" afterward, then
reboot.
