i downloaded skype from web page and installed it. now it won't show up
in the list of applications.

could be. i thought of a clue for you. when i installed skype from
their web page it seemed to go okay. however when it didn't work then
i tried to remove the thing. it did NOT show up in the list of apps in
the synaptic package mgr. so then
i went to the medinuntu page and re-installed us
i used the synaptic gizmo and found that alsa thingie is aleady installed.
