I seem to have fixed this problem this way:
# mv /var/cache/hald/fdi-cache~ /var/cache/hald/fdi-cache
It would be nice if hald would just create this file rather than dying
when it doesn't exist, particularly since the system is pretty much
unusable without hal.

this means dbus is running..
