i am absolutely sure that the commands i provided are the ones executed,
with no file to open or any other additional parameters than the ones
already mentioned.
It could be that in the default installation there is a script called
mplayer that gets executed when i run "mplayer" and provides extra
but no stdout.

that doesn't help at all. please paste the console output that mplayer
prints when you experience the problem. This includes the commandline
that is used when you play the media file.

That's not a sufficient indication about what specific ao module is
used. please paste your complete command line and complete console output.
