I have got lubuntu installed by doing the following:
* Set noapic option at startup
* Do not install 3rd party binaries
* Ensure you update the installer.
This will usually still crash at the 'Detecting hardware' stage, but
will pass through to complete installation approx 1 in every 7 attempts

I got to a working system by pressing F6 at startup, and selecting
'noacpi'. (thanks to advice on IRC #lubuntu)

lubuntu 12.04 installer fa
Trying Lubuntu 12.04 on Dell Inspiron 1300 with 2GB Ram.
All goes well until 'detecting hardware'
Installer completely freezes (no mouse response)
Managed to restart with REISUB
This has happened twice now.

lu
the same install media worked perfectly on a D610 last week. This
machine had Ubuntu 10.10, installer asked to upgrade to Lubuntu 12.04
Seemed to go OK until first run, then nothing work, couldn't identify
existing system, had to do new install, repartition etc
